Common feeder birds

Some wild birds prefer a feeder and some do not. Here is a list and brief description of some of the most common feeder birds.

Purple Finch

Purple Finches are often confused with the House Finch who has more streaking, a different color of red, and a different face pattern. They have cup shaped nests are made of grass, bark and twigs and placed on a high branch.

Black-capped Chickadee

Chickadees are some of the most common feeder birds. The Black-capped Chickadees are small gray birds with black caps and black throats. Their nests are in a hole inside trees or in a birdhouse. They have cup-shaped nests made of feathers, hair and soft plants.

Red-headed Woodpecker

Woodpeckers, like this Red-headed Woodpecker, love to eat at feeders. It nests in holes of dead trees or poles. Their favorite foods are insects, nuts and dried fruits. It will visit feeders with sunflower seeds, nuts and suet.
