A husky finch, the male gives an overall raspberry red impression. Purple Finches are often confused with the House Finch who has more streaking, a different color of red, and a different face pattern.
The Purple Finch prefers a conifer forest, but can be found in suburban areas, orchards and deciduous forests. Cup shaped nests are made of grass, bark and twigs and placed on a high branch.
Hang a tube feeder from a branch. Even on windy days, finches will delightfully feed on a swaying feeder.
