Widespread and common; males have white breasts, pink bills and charcoal gray bodies; females are browner; both sexes show white outer tail feathers in flight. They are often called "snowbirds" and are actually sparrows.

Their nests are grass-cupped and hidden on the ground. Dark-eyed Juncos prefers to feed on the ground near pine trees and in weedy fields.

Scatter seed on the ground in a covered area or place a tray feeder in an open area that has cover from shrubs and trees nearby.  Dark-eyed Juncos are one of the most common birds at the feeder in winter.

Usually arrive in October and stay through April in North America and Northern Mexico.
