The California Towhee is 8-10" long, with grayish-brown feathers and reddish accents around their eyes, beak and underpants.

California Towhees live in the California chaparral shrub lands along the coasts and foothills.  They can also be found in open areas of junipers, oaks and sage. 

You can encourage California Towhees to come out in the open in your backyard by offering seed including millet.  Towhees are ground foragers and they both run and hop searching for insects and berries.  Spread seed on the ground or offer on a tray feeder to attract them
