Physical Traits: The California Towhee is 8-10" long, uniform gray-brown with a reddish-brown eyering, face and undertail coverts. It has a long tail, short wings, and a thick, short, conical bill.

Habitat: California Towhees inhabit the shady underbrush of the open woods or low chaparral scrub of California and southern Oregon and the suburban yards and parks of coastal California towns, foraging on the ground. The female builds a cup nest of twigs and grasses in a shrub or young tree.
