Physical Traits: Squirrels belong to the rodent family and have 365 species in seven different families. The name is derived from the Greek word "skiouros", which means “shade tail". The most common squirrels have gray and brown fur colors. The gray squirrels color vary from a reddish tint to white.

Habitat: They are one of the most successful animals to adjust to human environments. They use tree cavities and leaf nests for their dens. They will also take advantage of human provided refuge in attics and crawlspaces.

Feeder Tips: We suggest placing a platform feeder at ground level. Be sure to place the feeder on a platform that allows air to circulate under the feeder. You will also want to secure it to the platform to prevent tipping from larger mammals that will be attracted to the food in the feeder. Squirrels will be adept at securing their spot at most types of bird feeders.
