Evening Grosbeak
Evening Grosbeak

Physical Traits: This beautiful bird is yellow, white and black; suggests a husky goldfinch with an enormous bill. An "eruptive" migrant -- northern species migrate south only when food supplies fall short.

Habitat: They are partial to spruce-forested areas and will visit feeders in winter. They build their nests of twigs in a cup shape and usually put it in a fork of a tree limb. They love sunflower seeds and safflower seeds.

Recommended Feeder: Large hopper, large tube, platform feeder

Feeder Tips: Grosbeaks, like Cardinals, prefer feeding on platforms. We recommend a covered feeder to provide protection to the food and refuge to the birds. Ground feeding can be risky for the bird, so place the feeder in an open area where he can easily detect danger. Provide cover with shrubs and trees for the birds to fly to safely.

States and Regions Found: Evening Grosbeaks are throughout most of the United States except for the extreme south - Nevada, Arizona and California.
