Dark-eyed Junco
Physical Traits: Widespread and familiar; males have white breasts, pink bills and charcoal gray bodies; females are browner; both sexes show white outer tail feathers in flight. They are often called "snowbirds". Habitat: Their nests are grass-cupped and hidden on the ground. Prefers to feed on ground near pine trees and in weedy fields. Recommended Feeder: Platform Feeder Feeder Tips: Place the platform feeder in an open area that has cover from shrubs and tress nearby. Dark-eyed Juncos are one of the most common birds at the feeder in winter. States and Regions Found: Usually arrive in October and stay through April in North America and Northern Mexico.
