Acorn Woodpecker
Physical Traits: The coloring of the male is brilliant red from the nape to a white forehead. The female is red only at the rear of her crown. Habitat: True to it's name, this woodpecker spends much of its time storing acorns in holes drilled into trees, fence posts, and other man made structures. The Acorn Woodpecker's habitat is generally in oak and pine woodlands. It can be seen in urban parks or suburban areas where oak trees are common. Its nest is built in the cavity of a tree or tree limb with a blanket of wood chips at the bottom of the nest. Recommended Feeder: Lyric Woodpecker Feeder Feeder Tips: Selectively limit your feeding site for optimal pleasure by offering the food in a Lyric Woodpecker Feeder. This cedar feeder is uniquely designed so that only the woodpeckers' and nuthatches' long bills and tongues can get the bits of food. We suggest smearing some suet or peanut butter on the cedar and in the holes to attract the bird and help it identify the food source. Hanging the feeder from a tree branch or close to a tree trunk is optimal. Squirrel baffles are always recommended. States and Regions Found: Acorn Woodpeckers are resident in western Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico and western Texas. They also have populations extending into Central America and isolated populations in Colombia.
