Physical Traits: The coloring of the male is brilliant red from the nape to a white forehead. The female is red only at the rear of her crown.

Habitat: True to it's name, this woodpecker spends much of its time storing acorns in holes drilled into trees, fence posts, and other man made structures. The Acorn Woodpecker's habitat is generally in oak and pine woodlands. It can be seen in urban parks or suburban areas where oak trees are common. Its nest is built in the cavity of a tree or tree limb with a blanket of wood chips at the bottom of the nest.

States and Regions Found: Acorn Woodpeckers are resident in western Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico and western Texas. They also have populations extending into Central America and isolated populations in Colombia.
